Growing your faith
Growing your faith.
Many of us belong to Bible study groups even if is just a family bible study group. How can we encourage the members of our group or our family to grow in their faith? Everyday we face temptation and the snares of the devil causing us to falter in our walk with Christ.
“Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. (Romans 4: 18 – 21, NRSV)”. We see that Abraham had faith that God would fulfill his promise. Even though it seemed impossible he placed his trust in God. Find other passages in the bible where God made a promise to his people and share them with the group.
Gods presence is all around us. Do you know of a time when something wonderful or miraculous happened? Maybe we have not experienced anything miraculous but for sure we have all had a time that we were reading the scriptures and it moved us in a special way. Have everyone share a time when they received comfort from reading the Bible.
Have everyone share a passage from the Bible about when God made a promise and then kept it. Talk about what God is saying that he will do for us in this promise. Remember that God will always give us what we need to be close to him. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly. (Psalm 84: 11 NRSV)”. This does not mean that he will grant us everything that we want.
Through our faith all is possible. “He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you”. (Mathew 17:20, NRSV)”. The mustard seed is the tiniest seed and Jesus said if we had that much faith we could move a mountain. Everyday we hear of miracles happening. Jesus lives in our hearts, and through our faith great things can happen.
Our promise with God. When we make the decision to follow Christ we make a promise to him. “Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him. (Acts 2:38 – 39, NRSV)”. Have everyone in the group share their decision to follow Christ. If they are still trying to make that decision have them share what they have experienced and felt so far. Perhaps others can reaffirm those feelings.
Always take time out to pray after your study session. Encourage your study group to keep seeking joy in the Lord. Know that god will make sure that his promises will be kept, and that even when it seems that things are going bad God has you under his care. If we stand true to our faith the devil has no ammunition to use against us. I hope that this little exercise will help you and your family or group grow in faith.
